Çayönü AI-VR Experience Project Takes Second Place Globally at the Huawei ICT Competition Global Final 2026

Mentored by Associate Professor Dr. Savaş Sarıaltun, faculty member at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University and Head of the Çayönü Tepesi Excavation, the “Çayönü AI-VR Experience” project achieved significant international success by winning second place globally in the Innovation Category at the Huawei ICT Competition Global Final 2026 held in Shenzhen, China.

Bringing together Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University’s scientific expertise with a global technology vision, the project brought pride to Turkey on the international stage by demonstrating great success in the global final held in China, following its first-place win in Turkey and second-place finish in Europe.

Developed under the consultancy and mentorship of ÇOMÜ faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Savaş Sarıaltun, the project featured the "Anadolu Leoparları" (Anatolian Leopards) team, consisting of ITU Architecture student Salih Can Öcal and Koç University students Melih Döner and Roya Arkhmammadova. Enriched by the support of creative archaeology workshops from Hanife Nurbahar Kurtlu, founder of the ArkeoLudo social enterprise, the project drew attention for combining artificial intelligence and virtual reality technologies to preserve and transmit cultural heritage.
